Solo exhibition opens at the AS220 Reading Room this Saturday

“The Inside Out,” a solo show of new work by Katrina Ellis in the Reading Room at AS220 Galleries, opens on Saturday, August 4 with a reception from 5-7pm. The exhibition continues to be on view through August 25.

The exhibition includes a series of recent works on paper and a sculptural piece. Drawing from her emotional memory, Katrina’s work expresses both a wonderment of, and alienation from, the natural world that surrounds us– a world that we are far more intrinsically connected to than we often acknowledge.

“The inception of the work in this show came about when I kept thinking about a line I had read in the surreal “Light Boxes” by Shane Jones: “You never saw it, but there’s a garden inside me.” We all cultivate our own little universes, seemingly without the ability to share what’s growing inside: the complexity, the beauty, the conflicted, the celebratory. I wanted to let the inside out.”

AS220 Reading Room is located at 93 Mathewson St in Providence, RI. Gallery hours are W-F/1-6pm + Sa/12-4pm, or by appointment. For more information about visiting AS220: https://as220.org/galleries/about/

Live Drawing for Hera Gallery Draw-a-go-go on 7/22

Delighted to have been invited back to participate in this year’s Draw-a-go-go, a fundraiser for the nonprofit Hera Gallery, based in Wakefield, RI. This year, they’ve changed the location to the tasty Kingstown brewery, Whalers, which has a great tasting room that you can enjoy while watching the live drawing. All participating artists have been assigned a time slot– I start drawing at 5:30pm.

It was a lot of fun last year, and a bit of a personal challenge, since participating artists donate the drawing that they work on at the end of the hour. I work slowly, but I wanted to make sure that the gallery have a finished piece in order to be able to sell! Hera Gallery sells these works for $50 each, making it a great event to find some affordable art from a local artist– one that you’ve perhaps actually watched the artist create.

Self Composed
Curated by Jeff Bartell

Opening reception: June 7, 6-9pm

Self-portraiture is an age old practice merging artistic subject matter and the creator. In lieu of a sense of tradition or conventional presentation, SELF COMPOSED highlights works that seek to abstract, deconstruct, re-contextualize, and push at the boundaries that define a self portrait.

here. Show opening at LORE 4/8

It’s been awhile! I’ve been in my studio a lot this winter finishing up some larger paintings that I’ve been working on for several years, and happy that they’re nearing completion. In the meantime, I’m lucky enough to have been included in this cool show that combines fine art, jewelry, furniture and other media.

Lore moved from their previous location in The Arcade to 144 Brook Street last month. The new space is gorgeous and light filled, and owner Jayna Aronovitch took the opportunity to put together a show that really takes advantage of the bright space.

“You know, we’re here now.”
