here. Show opening at LORE 4/8

It's been awhile! I've been in my studio a lot this winter finishing up some larger paintings that I've been working on for several years, and happy that they're nearing completion. In the meantime, I'm lucky enough to have been included in this cool show that combines fine art, jewelry, furniture and other media.

Lore moved from their previous location in The Arcade to 144 Brook Street last month. The new space is gorgeous and light filled, and owner Jayna Aronovitch took the opportunity to put together a show that really takes advantage of the bright space.

"You know, we're here now."

Cedilla lit mag release party Saturday, August 8th

I was lucky enough to be one of 10 invited artists to create 15 original covers for the newest edition of Çedilla. Each person who purchases a copy of Ç viii (v. 8.0) will have the ability to choose a book with an artist-designed cover. It was a fun project, which I decided to use liquid watercolor, dye and pen to execute. Here's the results:

There is a free, open to the public release party, presented by Spinoza Press, at Bar Matchless in Williamsburg, this Saturday, August 8th, from 3-6pm. Look at the cover art, listen to live music by matt gray and nathanael lay, hear readings from the journal and mingle with the people involved. Copies of the journal will be available for purchase. Here's the facebook event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/801270379994005/812570885530621/

Readings by: peter clavin, timothy cook, matt gray, erin anderson, keith olejniczak, anastasia korolkova, justin de senso, pete wilson, morgan persephone morningstar & jennifer seaman.

The other cover artists include: maureen mccourt, caitlin cook-wightman, heather gray, matt gray, cynthia hawkins, michael mccourt, marena mitchell, regina ruff, kerri ann ruhl, & brendan stewart.

Ç, or Cedilla (pronounced Sa-dee-ya), is an annual literary journal now in its 8th year. The covers of the eighth edition of the Cedilla journal features original artwork by 10 artists and will be on display. The pages are filled with stories, poems, and other writings by several authors who will be reading from the journal.

The show features the work of 35 artists, and is a collection of over 200 two dimensional works, plus several installation works.

GRIN is open Saturdays 12-5PM, by appointment or chance.

"Sadder Star, Garden Eyes" Installation at Dirt Palace in November

KatrinaEllis_DP_GardenInside_dtlI was delighted to be invited to create an installation for the Window Project Space at Dirt Palace, the all-female artist collective, in Olneyville Square, Providence. The installation was largely inspired by a Shane Jones quote, from his novel "Light Boxes:" “You never saw it, but there's a garden inside me.”  The installation also continues my experimentation with manipulated found object installation, comprised mostly of materials that would otherwise be deemed scraps or trash and discarded. It is the largest scale installation I have attempted so far at 23'5" x  7'5" x 4'.

Dirt Palace members have co-curated the Dirt Palace Storefront Window Gallery on a monthly basis for the past 14 years. Every day six thousand cars and a steady flow of foot traffic pass through this major intersection of Plainfield Street and Manton Avenue. The Dirt Palace Window Gallery faces the bustling intersection of Olneyville Square, and is free and open to the public 24 hours a day. This ongoing public art project has featured the work of variety of local, national, and international artists, community groups, and youth arts programing.

"Sadder Star, Garden Eyes" will be up through November 30th, 2014. See a flickr album of images taken of the installation here.

My work featured in Providence Phoenix's review of "SWELL"!

Super excited about Greg Cook's review of "SWELL," the group exhibition I'm included in currently at GRIN in Providence, which was published on January 15th in the print and online versions of the Providence Phoenix. Check out the article online here.

Apparition
Apparition (If I'd realized it would be so fleeting)

I was lucky enough to get a full paragraph on my installation: "Katrina Ellis’s past works have included installations that look like critters hiding under afghans and fabric and lace pieces that look like mutant jewelry-doilies. Here Apparition (If I’d Realized It Would Be So Fleeting) is three bands of die-cut turquoise and green fabric held together by pins, plus some yarn and buttons to span part of the room. It creates a charming droopy pattern, like psychedelic inkblot spiderweb of chopped-up men’s ties."

I also have three works on paper in the flat files. "SWELL" continues at GRIN through March 1st. They are located at 60 Valley Street, in the Olneyville section of Providence.

SWELL at GRIN, Opens Jan. 11th!

I'm delighted to have been invited to create an installation for this exhibition at GRIN in Providence.  I will also have some works on paper in the show. The gallery opened last summer in the Olneyville Plant, and is really upping the ante on the contemporary arts scene in Providence!

The opening is January 11th, 12-9pm.  The show will run through March 1st, and is open by appointment.  They will also be hosting some pretty cool events centered around poetry, storytelling and performance, throughout the duration of the show.

Pictures of installation to be posted soon!

"Ransom" at Wayfarers, Opens Nov. 9th

I'm participating in this playful exhibition in Brooklyn, at this cool member-run gallery Wayfarers, located at 1109 Dekalb Ave. in Bed-Stuy.

The show features over 300 artists, who were each assigned a word, with the instructions of creating a work of art featuring their word. The resulting collaboration of works will be combined on the wall for viewers to read. This "ransom note," based on a true story of a kidnapped plant, will also feature works by my friends Kristen Rego and Maureen McCourt, among others!  My word was "more" and I'm really happy with how it turned out. An art assignment was fun for a change!

The show is on view from November 9th - December 8th.  Check wayfarers.org for more info.
